Pieces From My Wheel Practice

Do you remember what it was like during the pandemic? I still vividly recall many of my experiences from that time.

I discovered new interests that my hands gladly welcomed, one of them was trying out wheel pottery. Back in high school, I had always wanted to try my hand at the wheel, but since there was only one ceramicist with a studio back then, the workshop rates were expensive.

When things started to ease during the pandemic, I finally enrolled in a beginner’s wheel pottery workshop. I loved the experience. It was a bit awkward at first, since I had to bend down while trying hard to form the clay on the wheel. But for me, pottery was therapeutic, you focus only on the clay and nothing else. The clay becomes your friend.

After my workshop, I decided to buy a simple wheel and set up a small garage studio at home. Together with my sister, I opened an Instagram page dedicated to pottery called Potteryfic. We even managed to sell some pieces together.

Before I moved to Canada, I threw and sold many pieces such as cylinders, cups, lidded jars, serving plates, small plates, planters, and bowls. More recently, I tried mug glaze painting at Pottery Works, a pottery studio in New Westminster.

I hope to continue pottery whenever I get the chance. The photo above shows some of my wheel-thrown pieces.
