What makes you happy?
My most recent read was Eddie Jaku’s The Happiest Man on Earth. I remember the first time I read it was back home in the Philippines. When I moved to Canada, admittedly, I sometimes feel homesick. So I searched for the book again to be inspired, and fortunately, I was able to borrow it for free from Overdrive.
This non-fiction book, I think, is a must-read. It talks about Eddie’s life-changing experiences during the Holocaust. I have always been drawn to books and movies about this period, maybe because they remind us of the power of resilience, hope, and compassion even in the darkest times.
Eddie survived the Holocaust and chose happiness despite everything he went through. His story made me realize that happiness is not about what we have but how we choose to see life. As a newcomer in Canada, his story resonates deeply with me. It reminds me to stay kind, patient, and sincere to everyone I meet, no matter where they come from.
Life may not always be easy, but like Eddie, I try to appreciate the small joys that make every day meaningful. There is always something to be thankful for, every day.
